# How to receive email on your domain

How to receive email on your domain with SendBeam: point a subdomain at it, add addresses, and capture replies to your campaigns.

SendBeam receives mail on a domain your workspace owns. You add the domain once, copy its DNS
records, and it starts receiving within minutes of the records appearing. Only workspace admins
can add a domain.

## Choose the domain

A subdomain such as `reply.yourbrand.com` is safest: mail for the rest of your domain
is not touched, so your existing mailboxes keep working.

You can use a whole domain, but then *all* mail for it comes to SendBeam once its MX record
changes, and any address not set up in SendBeam is refused. Only do this for a domain that has
no other mailboxes.

## Add it

1. Go to **Settings → Receiving** and select **Receive email on a domain**.
2. Type the domain and select **Check domain**. SendBeam looks at it first: whether it
is a subdomain or a whole domain, and whether it already receives mail somewhere else.
3. If adding it would move mail that already arrives elsewhere, you type the domain again to
confirm. Then the domain's own page opens, with the records to copy.

A name that is an alias (a CNAME record) can't receive mail, because DNS does not allow a mail
record beside an alias. Choose a different subdomain.

## Add the DNS records

Add the records shown on the domain's page wherever the domain's DNS is managed (your registrar,
Cloudflare and so on). The **Found** column ticks each one off as SendBeam sees it.
SPF and DMARC need no change for receiving.

If you are using a whole domain, remove its old MX records too, so mail does not go to two places.

## Addresses

When the domain starts receiving, SendBeam creates its reply address, which carries replies to
your campaigns. On the domain's page you can add addresses of your own, such as
`hello@` or `support@`, each with an optional note saying what it is for.
Your plan sets how many addresses a workspace can have, and the page shows the limit.

For each address you choose who can send to it:

- **Anyone**. Strangers are kept apart and never trusted.
- **Only replies, contacts and team members.**

Each address's menu also sets how its attachments are handled, and an admin can restrict an
address to particular people (see [Who sees what](https://sendbeam.io/docs/inbox#who-sees-what)).

## Replies to your campaigns

With **Capture replies to campaigns** on (it is on by default), your campaigns carry a
reply address on your receiving domain. When someone replies, the reply arrives linked to the
contact and the campaign. A sending domain can be paired with its own receiving domain under
**Settings → Domains**, so one brand's subscribers never see another brand's domain.
